GRRRRRRLS / Ásrún Magnúsdóttir (Reykjavík)

  • Gamla bíó Ingólfsstræti Reykjavík, Capital Region, 101 Iceland

Turning thirteen - everything changed. We got teenage, we got problems, we got loved, and then we got loved again by someone else. We got to know things about things that you’ll never know, because we’re teenage girls and that’s not something just anyone can say. Because it’s only us that can be teenage girls, and only us that know what that means.

Concerned with what female solidarity can mean for a group of teenage girls today, Ásrún searches for answers among a crew of real-life dancing teenage girls. What does it mean for these girls to speak as one, what should they say? What does it mean for them to stand together, how should they stand? What does it mean for them to be together, to back one another up, to be all for one and one for all? Dancing through all these question and some more, grrrrrls looks to provide some answers.

GRRRRRRLS, commissioned by Reykjavík Dance Festival, is a new dance work by choreographer Ásrún Magnúdsóttir.

About Commissions

Following RDF’s two award winning / award nominated commissions by Icelandic choreographers last year – Ásrún Magnúsdóttir with Church of Dance, and Erna Ómarsdóttir and Valdimar Jóhansson with A Lecture on Borderline Musicals – this year RDF continues to commission new work by three exceptional artists – Margrét Bjarnardóttir, Ásrún Magnúsdóttir and Lilja Birgisdóttir.

Each of these three artists take as their starting point the word concert. Taken not only as a musical event, but as it can be understood etymologically. Coming from the word concertare, concert finds its musical meaning in the generic action of striving together with others for unity, for agreement, or harmony. Despite being aesthetically divergent, the common dynamic among all three commissions will be this search. Whether that search is made manifest as a call to action towards an audience, a collective dance, or a musical search for harmony.

GRRRRRLS
