The festival focuses on the working process.

We celebrate first sketches, research processes, gut feelings, watering of seeds coming from unknown places. We offer artists opportunities to try out new things, follow ideas that perhaps lead them to nowhere. We want to research the creative process, together in a complete artistic freedom.

The building block of LÓKAL this year is the artist workshop Kveikjur, in which four artists are given time and space to fondle in the dark with inspirations and seeds that are yet to take shape. Three Inspirereswill help guide them by sharing tools they have gathered on their own journey through artistic darkness.

On the opening night of the festival these inpireres will give talks on the creative process. The artist at the workshop will then have one week to work on their seeds and present the results at the festival on sunday.

LÓKAL 2019 is the first festival with new artistic directors: Eva Rún Snorradóttir and J. Vala Höskuldsdóttir. They took over from the creators: Bjarni Jónsson, Ragnheiður Skúladóttir and Guðrún Jóhanna Guðmundsdóttir who founded the festival in 2008.
